Eastern Class Championships 2023
March 17, 2023 - March 19, 2023
The class section format we are using here does not allow players to play "up" (in a higher class than the class which corresponds to their rating) on an unlimited basis. Instead, our sections already include players who are rated in the top half of the class below. For example, Class A is traditionally defined as players rated between 1800-1999. We have expanded Class A also to include players rated 1700-1799 (the top half of the traditional Class B). With this expanded format, our Class A section already includes players rated 1700-1999. The same principle applies to most of the other sections as well. This expanded format gives the higher rated players in the traditionally defined classes an opportunity to play with even higher rated players than they normally would have, while still maintaining a minimum rating requirement for most of the sections. The rating cutoff for one class also overlaps with the class above, giving players more flexibility in choosing which section to play. A player rated 1700, for example, could play in Class B (players rated 1500-1799) or in Class A (players 1700-1999). Unrated players are also allowed in Class A and below, with prize restrictions in each of those classes.
Continental Chess usually allows players to use an unofficial rating from within the past 12 months in order to play UP in a higher section than the section which corresponds to their current official rating (but you are not permitted to use an unofficial rating which is lower than your current official USCF rating).
